Cleaner working beside a bright window

Mattresses collect skin flakes, dust, sweat and particles from the surrounding room. Regular care will not make an old mattress new, but it can keep the sleeping surface fresher and make stains easier to manage.

Before cleaning: check the mattress manufacturer’s guidance. Foam, sprung, natural-fibre and specialist mattresses may require different care.

Build a simple routine

Wash bedding regularly at the temperature appropriate for the fabric. Every month or two, use an upholstery attachment to vacuum the top, sides and accessible seams. Move slowly and pay attention to tufts and piping where particles accumulate.

Respond quickly to spots

Blot fresh liquid with a clean absorbent cloth. Do not rub, as this spreads the stain and pushes moisture deeper. Apply only a small amount of a suitable cleaner to the cloth rather than soaking the mattress directly.

Work from the outer edge of the mark inward. Blot again with a barely damp cloth if the product instructions require rinsing, then allow complete airflow and drying before replacing bedding.

Manage odour carefully

Ventilation and dryness matter more than covering smells with fragrance. If the manufacturer permits, a light application of baking soda can sit on the surface before being vacuumed thoroughly. It should remain dry and must not be left as gritty residue.

What to avoid

  • Do not saturate the mattress or use a steam machine unless the manufacturer approves it.
  • Do not mix stain-removal chemicals.
  • Do not remake the bed while any area remains damp.
  • Do not ignore persistent musty odour, visible mould or pest evidence.

Mould inside a mattress or signs of bedbugs usually require specialist assessment and may mean replacement rather than surface cleaning.

Protect the clean surface

Use a washable, breathable mattress protector and clean it according to its label. Keep the room ventilated, address humidity and vacuum beneath the bed. Rotate the mattress only if its design and warranty allow it.

A steady routine is far easier than attempting an aggressive rescue clean after years of buildup.
