Deep cleaning works best when it is treated as a sequence rather than a burst of enthusiasm. The goal is to remove what does not belong, expose the surfaces that need attention, and work from cleaner areas toward dirtier ones without repeating work.
1. Prepare before you begin
Collect microfibre cloths, a vacuum with attachments, suitable surface cleaners, gloves, brushes, a mop and two containers: one for items that belong elsewhere and one for donations or disposal. Open windows where appropriate and read product labels before mixing or applying anything.
- Remove loose objects from floors and worktops.
- Start laundry early so bedding and washable textiles can run in the background.
- Photograph complex shelves before emptying them if you want an easy reset.
- Test unfamiliar products on a hidden area first.
2. Deep-clean the kitchen
Begin above eye level: light fittings, cabinet tops and extractor surfaces. Empty one cabinet at a time, vacuum crumbs, wipe the interior and return only what is useful and in date. Clean appliance exteriors, then tackle the oven and refrigerator according to manufacturer guidance.
Kitchen priority list
- Degrease the splashback and cabinet fronts.
- Clean around handles, switches and frequently touched controls.
- Descale taps with a material-safe method.
- Pull out movable appliances and clean beneath them.
- Finish with sink, worktop and floor sanitation.
3. Reset bathrooms
Allow suitable cleaner to dwell on soap buildup and mineral deposits while you address mirrors, shelves and exhaust vents. Work from the least contaminated surfaces toward the toilet. Use separate colour-coded cloths if possible and never mix bleach with acidic or ammonia-based products.
Brush grout gently, clean shower tracks, wipe the underside of dispensers and check corners for persistent damp. Replace or wash bath mats only after the floor is finished.
4. Living rooms and bedrooms
Vacuum soft furnishings using the correct attachment. Move light furniture, clean skirting boards and address the edges where floor dust collects. Dust fan blades, curtain rods, frames and the tops of wardrobes before cleaning lower furniture.
In bedrooms, rotate the mattress if its care guidance allows, vacuum the surface and wash bedding at the appropriate temperature. Keep moisture away from the mattress core and allow everything to dry completely before remaking the bed.
5. Finish without undoing the work
Vacuum every room before mopping so loose grit does not become muddy residue. Move toward the exit and allow floors to dry. Return only useful objects, leaving some empty space so future routine cleaning stays easy.
A realistic deep clean may take more than one day. Divide work by zones and stop before fatigue makes chemical handling, ladder use or lifting unsafe.
